International Call for Applications

Short-Term Research Fellowship 2027

Prof. Pablo Pulgar Moya

Fondecyt Initiation Project “Hegel (+Marx) and Space”

Within the framework of Fondecyt Initiation Project No. 11251532, which focuses on system, complexity, and spatiotemporality in Hegel, an international call is opened for a short-term fellowship aimed at doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers conducting ongoing research related to modern philosophy, German Idealism, metaphysics, philosophy of history, or related areas connected to Hegel’s work, for a short research stay between 30 and 90 days.

The purpose of this call is to strengthen international philosophical exchange by promoting academic collaboration between early-career researchers and specialists working on issues related to German Idealism and its contemporary developments. The fellowship will fund an in-person academic stay in Chile for a flexible period of between one and three months. The program provides a single fixed amount of CLP $1,500,000 intended to support living and accommodation expenses during the selected researcher’s stay. In addition, the round-trip international airfare will be arranged and funded directly by the project through Hegel Austral (maximum cost: CLP $1,500,000).

During the stay, researchers will actively participate in academic activities associated with the project and the research group, including seminars, colloquia, conferences, philosophical discussion sessions, and collaborative working meetings. The call also includes participation in activities connected to the Hegel Austral research group directed by Professor Pablo Pulgar Moya, together with opportunities for academic exchange with professors and researchers in modern philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy of Diego Portales University (Chile).

The duration of the stay will be flexibly arranged according to the applicant’s work plan and the project’s availability, within the period between May 2027 and January 2028 (depending on scheduling compatibility between the host and the fellow), while the total fellowship amount will remain fixed regardless of the length of the stay.

Application Requirements

  • Be a regular doctoral student or a postdoc with an active research project.
  • Submit a brief research proposal of no more than one (1) page explaining the relationship between the applicant’s current work and the project’s thematic lines.
  • Submit an abbreviated academic CV of no more than two (2) pages.
  • Indicate the tentative period of stay and availability (between May 15, 2027 and January 25, 2028).
  • Reside outside Chile and/or outside Santiago de Chile.
  • [No language requirement]

Fellowship Coverage

  • Travel tickets (subject to a maximum of CLP $1,500,000, including one checked bag).
  • Fixed living allowance (for the entire stay) of CLP $1,500,000.
  • Access to facilities at Diego Portales University, including libraries and doctoral (IDF) or postdoctoral (ICSOH) researchers’ rooms.
  • In the event of publications resulting from the stay, the project number must be acknowledged in the publication.

Particular consideration will be given to thematic affinity with the philosophical problems addressed by the project, although related topics are also welcome, as well as a willingness to contribute actively to collective discussions and research activities. Related themes include:

  • Spatiotemporality, space, and/or time in Hegel (possibly also Marx)
  • System, method, and the absolute in Hegel (possibly also Marx)
  • Objectivity and reification in Hegel (possibly also Marx)

The call seeks to consolidate an international research network focused on Hegelian philosophy and to encourage the development of new perspectives on the problem of space, its logical dimension, and its historical-speculative scope.

Selection Criteria and Process

Applications will be evaluated by an academic committee composed of three members of the Hegel Austral research group. The selection process will consider especially:

  • The academic quality of the submitted research project.
  • Thematic affinity with the lines developed in the Fondecyt project.
  • The potential contribution to collective research, discussion, and academic dissemination activities.
  • Academic background according to the applicant’s stage of training/professional development.
