Hasta el 23 de julio se reciben propuestas de ponencias para el 4º Coloquio Internacional en Pensamiento Social y Político UDP, titulado «Constitución: El poder de formar modos de vida», a realizarse los días 2 y 3 de noviembre de 2017. Contará con la participación de los invitados Joel Colón-Ríos (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand) y Fernando Atria (Universidad de Chile).
Sobre el coloquio
En la teoría social y política, la noción de constitución continua siendo un tema central en tanto el término articula un predicamento moderno con profundas raíces históricas. En efecto, las constituciones no son meros objetos jurídicos de rango superior que fundamentan los derechos, instituyen capacidades legislativas y aseguran la legitimidad del estado. Ellas dan cuenta de las capacidades de auto-constitución de la sociedad para producir estructuras normativas y dar forma a la vida en común. Este poder de una comunidad (o de algunos de sus miembros) para crear y re-crear su forma de coexistencia política se manifiesta a la vez en la sedimentación de prácticas sociales, conceptos, instituciones y saberes. En este sentido, una constitución no representa una unidad estática de propósitos, sino que un espacio abierto de fuerzas, procesos y estrategias en disputa.
La cuestión de la constitución tiene especial relevancia y urgencia tanto en el contexto local del coloquio –debido a que Chile se ha embarcado recientemente en el proceso de establecer una nueva Constitución–, así como en el ámbito internacional –dada la crisis constitucional de la Unión Europea, el asalto populista a la democracia constitucional y el fracaso de una serie de proyectos constitucionales en sociedades posconflicto.
El coloquio invita a enviar propuestas de ponencias en español o inglés que exploren el problema de la constitución y el poder de dar forma a modos de vida desde distintas disciplinas (filosofía, ciencia política, sociología, historia, derecho, antropología) y enfoques (teoría crítica, feminismo, poscolonialismo, historia conceptual e intelectual, etc.). Entre los posibles temas a considerar, se encuentran:
– El concepto de constitución y conceptos constitucionales
– Poderes constituyente y destituyentes
– Momentos constituyentes y creación constitucional
– Crisis y revoluciones constitucionales
– Aprendizaje, progreso y regresiones constitucionales
– Soberanía democrática y formas posdemocráticas de vida
– Constitución de sujetos políticos, subjetividades y subjetivación
– Luchas normativas y crítica a las normas constitucionales
– Política constitucional, afectos e imaginación
– Constituciones transnacionales
– Constituciones más allá del constitucionalismo
Recibiremos resúmenes en torno a las 500 palabras, o bien artículos completos. Las propuestas deben ser preparadas para referato ciego y enviadas a [email protected]. La fecha final para recepción es el 23 de julio. Las ponencias aceptadas serán comunicadas antes del 30 de julio.

Constitution: The power of shaping forms of life

In political and social theory, the notion of constitution remains a central topic insomuch as the term articulates a modern predicament with deep historical roots. For constitutions are not merely juridical objects of a superior rank that ground rights, institute law-making capacities, and secure state legitimacy. They attest to the self-constituting capacities of society to produce normative structures and shape life in common. This power of a community (or some of its members) to make and re-make its political form of coexistence manifests itself in the sedimentation of social practices, concepts, institutions, and knowledges. In this sense, a constitution does not represent a static unity of purpose, but rather an open arena of conflicting forces, processes, and strategies.
The question of constitution is of special relevance and urgency today, both in the local context of the conference (as Chile has recently embarked on a process of establishing a new constitution) and in the international arena (given the constitutional crisis of the EU, the populist assault on constitutional democracy, and the failure of a number of constitutional projects in post-conflict societies).
The conference invites proposals for presentations in English or Spanish that explore the question of constitution and the power to shape forms of life from different disciplines (philosophy, politics, sociology, history, law, anthropology) and approaches (critical theory, deconstruction, feminism, postcolonialism, conceptual and intellectual history, etc.). Possible topics include:
– The concept of constitution and constitutional concepts
– Constituent and destituent powers
– Constituent moments and constitution-making
– Constitutional crises and constitutional revolutions
– Constitutional learning, progress, and regression
– Democratic sovereignty and postdemocratic forms of life
– Constitution of political subjects, subjectivities, and subjectivations
– Normative struggles and critiques of constitutional norms
– Constitutional politics, affects, and imagination
– Transnational constitutions
– Constitutions beyond constitutionalism
We welcome submissions of extended abstracts of around 500 words, or else of complete papers. They should be prepared for blind review and sent to [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is July 23. Notices of acceptance will be sent by July 30.
